What to Do When Running Your Dream Business is a Nightmare

Often in business we are asked to share our “WHY”.

Why do we do, what we do?

There are many benefits to the businesses that I’ve built over the last 10 years. I love to create, I love to connect, I love my clients and customers, but I’m not afraid to tell you that above it all I love the lifestyle that my success sustains.

True Success Looks, Tastes, And Feels Like Freedom

When building a business there are many factors to consider. Certain structures and strategies lend themselves to freedom and flexibility more than others.

However, with that being said it’s all about thinking outside the box. For the last 5 years, I’ve been living in New York City while successfully running my apparel and home decor companies that are manufactured and based out of Southern California.

What I see all too often is people running their dream businesses, but it’s become a nightmare.

They are working more than ever, stressed out, and not getting to spend their time and energy on the parts of their business that they truly love.

What #WorkFromWherever Means to Me

As I write this, my daughter Olivia is snuggled up against my chest. I built my businesses so that I could have the freedom to work from wherever. Over the past few years, I’ve built my online empire in a way that affords me the freedom to work from the sandy beaches in the south of France or the snowy mountains of the Swiss alps. However, sitting here on the deck of our lake home, with my daughter and my pup at my feet, might be my favorite place of all.

I love the Diane Von Furstenberg quote “I didn’t know what I wanted to do, but I always knew the woman I wanted to be.” I never really knew what I wanted to do when I grew up either.

What I did know was that I wanted to be free. I saw my parents spend years of their lives in jobs, having to beg for time off to be able to attend my school events or go on vacation (we pretty much only got to take one a year together) — and I knew that I wanted something different for myself. I knew that when I had a family of my own, I wanted to be able to call the shots.

Here is my advice on how to build a business that affords you maximum freedom and flexibility (and don’t worry: this advice can be applied right from the beginning, or be used to modify an existing business that has begun to swallow you whole).

I firmly believe that nothing happens without a firm plan and vision of how to achieve it. Get clear on the life that you want to build for yourself and how that aligns with your business endeavors. Whether that means you need to tweak your business model, scale your business, hire your dream team, or something else entirely, plan your vision and invest in the advice and instruction you need to make it happen. In my Business Class program, I’ve created step-by-step training guide on topics from email marketing to — with the express purpose of making your visions easier to achieve.

Cut down on the number of projects that you have on your plate, and fully focus and invest yourself in just those few things. (THIS is how you create your best work, that will actually stand out.) To achieve this, you might need to use the destination guides in Business Class to work on your productivity or on hiring the perfect team to support you, but you must make it happen.

Figure out what is actually getting you clients and customers and eliminate other non-essential marketing tasks. Know your numbers and track what you are doing so that you KNOW what works and can apply more time to those strategies. Part of what makes the Business Class guides so powerful is that I have personally tested each method, and can report back on what works best.

One of the most important things I’ve done with all my businesses is to find the person who knows more than me on a particular subject, or who is further along with their business, and learn from them. Sometimes it’s a book, a course, a group, or a 1:1 coaching situation, but those are the most important purchases I’ve made to move my business forward. And that’s a big reason I created Business Class: so that you can learn from someone with real experience, and you don’t have to waste your time making the mistakes yourself.

In my experience, businesses cannot grow beyond a certain point when you are running everything solo. To reach that next level — and build a life you actually want to live — you need to bring people onto your team. Make a list of all of the tasks that you are currently doing, that you could delegate. I’m spilling all the little secrets about how my team and I work in the newest Destination Guides inside Business Class to give you examples of how it can work.

Everything you do is a system, from checking your email to selling your products and services. The question is, do you have good systems, or poor ones? I am a HUGE fan of systems, which is why I share all of mine inside Business Class. A good system makes things easier to accomplish and also allows you to hand off some or all of that task to another person.

Build a network so that you can parlay each other’s success. I believe very much that the caliber of people you associate with determines the level at which you play. Do you have friends and associates who are entrepreneurs? Do you regularly talk with other entrepreneurs to share ideas, ask questions, trade knowledge? If not, you need to join a group of likeminded individuals who can help elevate your network and your game.

Chasing after the next big thing is a fast lane to overwhelm, and can be a huge waste of time. Rather than jumping on every bandwagon, focus on only applying proven marketing methods. If you’re just starting out and don’t have any data or experience of your own, you need a trusted advisor who has tried and tested different marketing methods and can reliably report on what works, and I report on exactly what has worked and what hasn’t.

Easier said than done? Not necessarily!  You must scale your income so that you can hire your dream team and only do the work that you love. To make more money you will need to make sure that you are getting your offers in front of the right people — and that requires proven marketing tips and techniques like the ones I offer in Business Class.

The world of business is a fast moving place. Things come and go and change constantly. Embrace the fact that your business will never (and should never) stand still.
